I am so excited to share this with you! I love the whole beachy/coastal/nautical theme going on right now at Pottery Barn, West Elm, Target etc. When I walked into Pottery Barn last month I was in awe and I wanted to buy everything in the store (but unfortunately my wallet’s not that thick…) SO I of course did some improvising and came up with some of my own ways to recreate the look.
For my first project I wanted to make my own weathered looking beach sign. Lucky for me where I live there are wooden pallets literally laying out in the field behind my house. So I snatched one up and used one of the old distressed boards.
To make my sign I simply used my Cricut machine to cut out some vinyl letters and then stuck them to my board. Then I mixed some paint and water together and painted over the top. Mixing it with water made the paint thinner and let the natural wood show through making it look older.
Then I removed the vinyl
And ta-da! A beautiful weathered-looking beach sign (love how this turned out!)
I bought some rope from our local hardware store for $4 and used it to wrap around the base of my candles and my starfish statue (Michaels). It was easy..just hot glued it on
I bought shells and starfish (Michaels) and seaglass (Target) and used them as fillers for my apothecary jar and lanterns. The fishing net was also from Michaels.
A fun little touch
Lantern (Target)
My one big splurge was this mirror that I have been coveting at Target for a while now. It’s reminiscent of a sun so it was perfect for my beach mantle but I justified buying it because it can work all year (right?)
And here’s the finished product
I have a sudden urge to visit Cape Cod…how about you?
Oh my goodness!!! I am copying so much of this. You are so talented Markay!
I love your entire mantle! The planks and the moulding plus the beachy decor is perfect! Good job!
The whole thing looks amazing but I adore the Beach sign 🙂 And the mirror was a brilliant buy.
Love it! Your mantel looks like something out of a magazine! I love beach inspired decor…my favorite paint colors for our house are light blues and greens. The sign turned out awesome – wish I had some pallets laying around 🙂
What a gorgeous mantle! It’s so beautiful and perfect for summer. I love the handmade sign. I need to find some old pallets to make some cute signs like that. And you’re right – that mirror will totally work all year! I’m pinning this 🙂
I LOVE all of your ideas, they’re so perfect for summer! Now all I need is a beach house!
I love your mantel, and the fact that in stead of buying the decoration you actually made all the stuff yourself !
oh I LOVE this!! I wish I had a mantle I could decorate for the seasons 🙂 Would love to see you over @ Handmade Tuesdays sometime! http://www.ladybug-blessings.com
you know what my favorite thing in this whole post is? it’s the coffee table that you can see in the mirror, lol! so CUTE! love the mantle too, but that coffee table is awesome.
That looks awesome!!! I love beach theme too!! It’s my favorite! my main bath is beachy. Love that mirror!!
LOVE it all. Beautiful.
This is beautiful! Thanks documenting your step by step. <3
What color paint did you use on the sign?
I realize this is an old post but wanted to comment anyway. Your mantel is stunning – beautiful lines, elegant, balanced and classy. I just love it! I’m also loving the color on the wall. Reminds me of Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams 🙂
