DIY Ironing Board Cover

DIY Ironing Board Cover

I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive at first to take on this project.  I thought it would be much harder than it really was but believe me, it was so EASY!  If you can sew a straight line than you can make this.

My ironing board before was just a plain green color.  I looked everywhere for a new cover and couldn’t find anything that I liked or that would match my decor.  So my only option was to make one.

I decided on this beautiful fabric by Joel Dewberry that would fit in nicely with the rest of my laundry room.  I loved the pattern and color of it.  I bought 2 yards and that gave me plenty to work with.

You start by turning the ironing board over and tracing all the way around it onto the back of the fabric about 3 inches away from the edge.  It’s definitely not a perfect line but once you get your elastic in there it will take care of that.

After you’ve cut out your fabric then you’ll need to get out your iron.  You’ll want to fold over about a 1/2 inch of fabric and iron it down all around the way around

After you’ve ironed a 1/2 inch all around, then you will fold over another 1/2-3/4 inches and pin in place to sew.  This will make a nice finished pocket for your elastic.  *Remember to leave about a 1 inch opening for inserting your elastic into (for this project I used 1/4 inch elastic)

After you’ve finished sewing than you’re ready to insert your elastic.  The easiest way I’ve found to do this is by attaching a safety pin to one edge of the elastic and this will help you to push the elastic through

Once you’ve pushed the elastic all the way through then you’ll want to sew the two edges of the elastic together by sewing and back-stitching back and forth a couple of times

I loved that when I slipped the cover on it fit snuggly right on top of the ironing board and looked great!

Now it looks great hanging on my wall!  When we built our home we had our cabinet guys make us this cute hanger out of a cabinet face and 2 hooks.  I added the chalkboard arrow for a fun little touch 😉

If you want to make you’re own ironing board cover don’t be intimidated by this project!  It was much easier than I thought it would be and looks great! :)

  1. I’ve been meaning to recover mine in forever! I keep checking home goods in hope they have a pattern I like but never can find one. I think I just need to break down and make one!
