So it’s been a long time coming to redo my son Dawson’s room. He’s 11 years old and he’s had the same bedding/decor since he was 2!
He’s always loved sports and while I think his old bedding was cute, it’s a little too juvenile for him now.
Now I really want to try to give my kids rooms that they want…but it’s so hard to find that balance between what they want and what I WANT! If you know my family, you know that we are big University of Tennessee fans. We lived in Knoxville for 2 years and my husband and my son LOVE the Vols. Well, their color is orange. So guess what my son wanted? You guessed it…an orange room. Now, that’s a tough one for me. Orange is a pretty bold color and isn’t exactly my favorite. But it’s what he wants and he also wants to have kind of a basketball theme so I guess it goes with that.
So I started looking around on the internet for some ideas and came up with what I think was a good compromise 😉 Grey with accents of orange. So I took Dawson with me and we did some shopping for his room. Our first stop was Passport because I just recently won their Facebook contest and got a $100 store credit (woohoo!!) I found these awesome shelves there that look like reclaimed wood. I was going to make something that looked like these anyway but hey, if you can find them for free and don’t have to do the work then it’s even better!
Next we searched for some new bedding. Of course he wanted orange. I looked all over online trying to find an orange bedspread or quilt. The only one that I really liked was at Pottery Barn (which we don’t have by us) so to order it and have it shipped would’ve been almost $200…. So onto plan B. We went to Target. We found this orange bedding (and it was the PERFECT orange (if you are a TN fan you know that you have to have the right shade of orange!) We got grey sheets and a grey throw to go along with it. The quilt was on sale for $34.99 so I was pretty excited about that
Then the painting begins. Dawson’s room was already grey but it was a lighter grey than I wanted. So we got a darker shade of grey from Lowe’s called Hazy Stratus. So far I’m loving how it’s turning out.
A little more painting tonight and then onto staining furniture this weekend! I’ll keep you all posted on how it’s going along the way!
