Spring mantle with blooming letters

Spring Mantle

Spring is in the air and I definitely have caught spring fever!  This has always been my favorite season for lots of reasons, but mostly the flowers. I have been loving all of the blooming monograms out there and so I thought it would be fun to put my own spin on it and do an entire word. It’s an easy project and it was fairly cheap if you can find good deals.

floral letter materials

This is everything you will need.  I got the paper mache letters at JoAnn’s and the flowers from Michaels (50% off!)  Both of these stores always have coupons so if what you’re getting isn’t on sale you can still get a good deal.  Then you’re just going to need to use a box cutter, some spray paint, command strips and a hot glue gun (which I forgot to show…oops!)

Cutting off the top layer was pretty simple and actually once you started cutting you could just tear the rest off and it would tear right along the edge.

spray painted letters

After all the tops were cut off I spray painted the letters with my favorite color of spray paint – Valspar Color Radiance in Mirage (which is like a light aqua)

Then I just pulled all the tops off of my flowers and hot glued them inside the letters.  You could also fill the letters with floral styrofoam but my letters weren’t very deep so I didn’t use it.

Hang them up using the command strips and you’re done.  Super easy and so, so cute!

Master Bedroom Redo ~Hotel Style

hotelmaster

So I’ve been wanting to redo my master bedroom and I’m excited to share it with all of you!  I went with more neutral tones (although I did add a touch of aqua ;))

I used Rustolem Chalked paint in linen white to redo my dressers.  They were a dark brown before and I just wanted a lighter, fresher look.  I LOVED this product.  There was no sanding or priming required.  You do have to brush it on instead of using a paint roller but I like seeing some of the brush strokes that give it more of a vintage look.  I did have to apply 3 coats to get enough coverage but it turned out awesome!  After the coats had dried, I distressed the edges and also added some oil rubbed bronze hardware.  I finished up with the Rustoleum protective top coat in matte clear.

For Christmas I received a new upholstered bed from Wayfair in a charcoal color.  With my current grey bedspread it just wasn’t going to work.  So I looked everywhere for a new bedspread and finally ended up finding the perfect new comforter set from Bed, Bath and Beyond (Madison Park Pure Elena in aqua)

I decided I wanted to go with a more light and flowing look for my window treatments and finally found the perfect window sheers from Target (Threshold Clipped Sheer Curtain Panels in white) They have a really pretty pattern on them.  I got the 95″ length because I wanted them to pool on the floor.  I love how it adds so much softness to the room.

Target was my go-to place for a lot of my room.  I also found the settee and starburst mirror there.

The lamps and side mirror were from Home Goods.  I think adding more mirrors to the room also added more light and elegance.

My goal for this room was to feel like I was waking up in a hotel room every morning and I feel like I achieved that.  I love the more grown-up and timeless look that it has.

Enjoy!

Valentine Mantle

ValentineMantle

I’m baaaaaack…..
It’s been a while since I’ve done a post on here. It’s been a crazy few months and I will do a post soon to update you on everything.

So anyway…I HEART VALENTINE’S DAY :)
It’s one of my favorite holidays so I couldn’t pass up the chance to do a cute mantle.
My starting point for the whole thing was the large beadboard heart.  I had a vision of it in my head and it turned out exactly how I had pictured it!  I started out by buying a large sheet of unfinished beadboard at the home improvement store.  To make the shape of the heart I had a large sheet of butcher paper, folded it in half and then traced one half of the heart onto it.  That way both sides of the heart were the same.  I cut the heart out and then I taped it onto the front of my beadboard.

After I had traced it on a good friend helped me to cut it out with his jigsaw.  He put some tape on the line as he cut to help keep the wood from chipping.

cuttingoutheartAfter a little bit of sanding around the edges it was ready to be stained.  I used the same gel stain that I’ve used on a lot of my projects.  I love this stuff!  Just wipe it on with a cloth and that’s all there is to it!

walnutgelstainstaining heartTo hang the heart I just used some Command velcro strips (LOVE those things!)

I also made a fun LOVE sign from a canvas that I had stashed in my craft room closet.  I am SOOOO happy with how it turned out!  If you have a Cricut or any other die cut machine you can make this pretty easy.  I just cut the letters and heart shape out of some vinyl, stuck them onto the canvas and painted over the top of it.  When you pull the vinyl off you are left with the white lettering underneath

valentine sign love vinyl(the letters are different colors because that was all the vinyl I had)

love sign vinyl removalAfter I had removed the vinyl then I used the flowers from a silk hydrangea and hot glued them inside the shape of the heart.  It turned out super cute and was really easy!

valentine hydrangea love sign 1love signThe letters didn’t come out perfectly but I actually like that.  Makes it look a little more crafty 😉  Isn’t this so cute!????

And of course, I had to make a garland.  This was so easy.  I found some really cute little pink clothespins, some paper doilies, burlap hearts (already cut into a heart shape.. nice) and just attached them to some cute baker’s twine.

clothespinsandtwinevalentinegarlandSimple as can be.  My kind of project 😉

And last but not least was this slice of wood that I painted with some chalkboard paint.  I love the initials.  Reminds me of when couples carve their initials into a tree.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed my lovely Valentine mantle and I hope that it’s given you some inspiration for your own!  xoxo

fall flowers & mason jar arrangement

fall mason jar arrangment

Fall is in the air!  While it’s not my favorite time of year (I’m more of a spring girl) I still love a lot of things about fall.  One of the things I love is when the leaves start changing and all the beautiful colors come out.  I wanted to bring some of those colors into a fall flower arrangement and of course I had to mix in some aqua (who says you can’t have aqua in the fall?)

So everything I used I found at JoAnn’s and Michaels.  They’re pretty much the only craft stores in my area anyway.  The jars and the wooden basket thing (I don’t know what to call it) I got at JoAnn’s.  The basket was normally $29.99 but I used a 40% off coupon for it and the jars were $2 each.  I used cream colored spray paint to paint all the jars first.

Then to make a stencil I used my Cricut machine to cut out the letters for the word “FALL”

cricut stencil

I got this great aqua colored paint from Michaels (Martha Stewart brand) and stenciled the letters on to each jar.

Then after all the paint had dried I just used a nail file to rub off some of the paint off and give it a distressed look.

The flowers I bought were from Michaels and I will be honest- they were not cheap.  I did use a coupon but it didn’t save me a ton.  I still paid around $40 for the flowers.  Too bad they weren’t on sale!

The jars fit perfectly inside of my basket but I realized after I put them inside that the basket was too deep and was cutting off the bottom of the letters.  So I got some burlap that I folded up and put underneath the jars so it would raise the jars up.  In the end I’m really happy with how pretty it turned out and I will be using it to decorate my fall mantle….stay tuned for the post!

Recipe Review: Sweet Pork Burrito Bowls

This is really kind of a review of a couple of different recipes put into one to make the burrito bowls (ok…it’s really more of a plate)
Slow Cooker Sweet Pork Tenderloin
Crisp Cucumber Salsa

After making the pork and cucumber salsa here’s the other toppings we used:
white rice with cilantro
black beans
guacamole
salsa
sour cream
cheese
tomatoes
green onion

burrito bowl ingredients

Isn’t this a pretty plate?

So what did the family think?  The score averaged 9.5!  The kids loved it.  The only complaint my daughter had was she thought the pork was maybe a little too sweet.  I happened to like the sweetness that it added.  This was a great family meal and the best part…there was a ton leftover for tomorrow night!

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball…

If any of you who follow my blog are wondering what’s happened to me, let me just share what I’ve been through this past week.

Last week I had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic called Cephalexin.  It started out as a rash on my arm but quickly spread covering my entire body in a rash and hives.  I have never been so miserable in my life!  I have been put on high levels of steroids and anti-histamines which make me feel like I’m always in a fog and unable to function.  The steroids can also make you feel irritable and on edge so then I was prescribed another medication for anxiety to help calm me down but it basically makes you want to sleep all day.  Yesterday was pretty scary when I could feel itchiness in my throat.  I went to the doctor and he said he could see the rash in my throat now.  So I was given another shot of a different kind of steroid.  Basically, I have just been in a complete fog this whole last week and everything has been a blur.  I feel horrible that I haven’t been posting on the blog or been keeping up on my projects but it’s hard to do when you can barely get out of bed.

Sorry if these pictures gross you out! But this is basically what my entire body was covered in. Yuck!

On a brighter note, today I’m starting to feel a little better.  The hives are still there but they look like they might be starting to fade.  I’m hoping that this stuff is finally working it’s way out of my system and that I can finally get back to normal life.  With all of this happening and at the same time the kids were going back to school, I felt like my life was turned upside-down.

Please don’t give up on me!  I have lots of projects and ideas coming up and I promise that I will be back at it 100%!

Laundry Folding Center

laundry center

I will be the first to admit that laundry is not my favorite thing to do.  One reason is because it feels like it never ends!  There’s always going to be laundry to do, so my philosophy is why not try to make the best of it by making a space that’s organized, functional and aesthetically pleasing?
